Baker's #Sonnets (The Adventures of Jonathan Baker, part 1)
The #sonnets of #WilliamShakespeare were first published on #ThisDayInHistory in 1609, perhaps without his permission. They remain an enduring influence on #poetry and the English language, and I have returned to them many times in my life since falling for #Shakespeare as a kid.
Feel very autumnal this morning. Leaves on the turn in Otepoti/ Dunedin. Recalled Shakespeare's Sonnet 73:
That time of year thou mayst in me behold
When yellow leaves, or none, or few, do hang
Upon those boughs which shake against the cold,
Bare ruin'd choirs, where late the sweet birds sang. #sonnets #autumn

Nevermore Poem

Times change, wills change,

Times change, wills change,
Being changes, confidence changes:
The whole world is composed of change,
Always taking new qualities.

Continually we see new things,
Different in every way from hope:
From evil remain the sorrows in memory,
And from good (if there was any) the longing.

Time covers the ground with a green blanket,
Which was once covered with cold snow,
And in me turns the sweet song into tears.

And apart from this daily change,
Another change causes greater astonishment,
That it no longer changes as it used to.

For this week’s #ThursdayBooksandBeer I’m reading Practice, the debut novel by Rosalind Brown, which delves into the mind of an Oxford student trying to write an essay on Shakespeare’s sonnets. Brown’s short sections are pleasingly sonnet-like themselves. I’ve paired it with a hand-pulled Vintage Ale from Inner North Brewing, for that English feel. “For a moment she surveys her long series of hot meals and movements and solid nights in bed that are directed towards this: the close understanding of poems on a page. It seems both appalling and entirely appropriate.” #reading #literature #Shakespeare #sonnets #craftbeer
