Albert Barnes, a Presbyterian with a very sharp moral finger, basically says: if a widow’s kids are suffering, she’ll knock on strangers’ doors—and if you’re a Christian with a house full of cushions and cupboards, that knock is on you. A crumb from your mansion could’ve turned her place into Eden. And really—what other worldview dares accuse the comfortable like that? So… which tiny, barely-noticed bit of your surplus could you give today?

William Jay, Congregationalist minister, considers feast days in the Old Testament. Provision was to be made so the poor could participate, as well as the fatherless, the widows, and the strangers within the gate. Luke 14:12-13 and Isaiah 58 both reinforce bringing needy into the house.

How often do we do this? Would you put this command into a presentation on “spiritual joys” or one of “headaches”?

Albert Barnes, Presbyterian minister, on Job (chapters 29 and 31) being ever willing to plead the orphan’s case. Injuries to orphans are egregious, as they have no defense.

They suffer in war, abuse (Epstein, etc.), and as one left to themselves financially, and having their assets, such as a cow, being unfairly taken.

How can you deliver the fatherlesss and him that had none to help him?
