From « Checklist for a Software Management Plan » by Software Sustainability Institute, if one follows links then the recommendation reads:
« Regardless of where you deposit your software, you may also want to consider #SoftwareHeritage, an international initiative to provide a universal archive and reference system for all software. Software can be explicitly deposited into the Software Heritage archive via the Hal-Inria digital repository which is open to use by all researchers. »

« Where will you deposit your software to guarantee its long-term
availability?
Depositing your software within a digital repository ensures that the exact versions of your software upon which you have published your research results are retained and remain available for future use both by yourself and by other researchers. You enable other researchers, and your future self, to inspect, replicate, reproduce and reuse your research, as manifested in your software, in the short term and to inspect, for the historical record, in the long term. It allows your software to remain available beyond the lifetime of your current project or your current employment at a specific institution. »
🤔 Guess what? It’s the mission of #SoftwareHeritage! 🤩

« Where will you deposit your software to guarantee its long-term availability?
Repository hosting services such as GitHub, BitBucket, GitLab, Assembla or Microsoft Visual Studio Team Services that host source code repositories are great for the development of active software. However, they are not so well-suited for ensuring long-term availability. They don't create unique persistent digital identifiers for your repositories, but only provide URLs. Your repositories could later be deleted by yourself or your institution, or the repository hosting service may cease to operate, breaking links to these URLs. »
🤔 Guess what? #SoftwareHeritage is the answer! 🤩

Thanks @SO_UnivRennes retooting about @OpenSci_Pasteur’s «Software Management Plan » posts [2,3], I read the Software Sustainability Institute’s checklist [1].
For what my opinion is worth, this recommendation (from 2018) would need an update on two items (or make them more upfront, IMHO):
a) Explicitly rely on persistent identifier.
b) Archive on #SoftwareHeritage.

Software Heritage for UNESCO exhibit needs help from developers to get some code samples which can be used as an historical testimony, mirror of society or a cultural artefact.

Yesterday, after a intense afternoon and a nice dinner speaking about build systems, today Academic track at #DebConf25!
This afternoon, I’ll speak a bit about #Guix and #SoftwareHeritage.
