youtu.be/6MIBsuC9REo Between a mix of #battery #chemistry research and a #hybrid model, #China just solved basically all of the issues with using batteries for cars. 930 miles on one change for a sedan. This can translate into trucks big rigs as well, where you will see them more than in sedans.
Basically its a hybrid of a #sodium battery and a #lithium battery. I don't know what the exact type of each is, its too new but there are 2 batteries each with their own strengths and weaknesses. Most of the time you will only ever use the sodium part for any short range you use. Its amazing in extreme temps and charges insanely fast like the old lead acid batteries and lasts for a long time. However like with the plugin electric hybrid system, this one will have a backup once you drain the sodium batteries on long trips and kick in the lithium batteries.
Lithium goes bad faster the more you use it, not as much for sodium, so sodium will be your first use and only use and recharge your lithium battery as a last resort. This means that the batteries can last an insanely long time. 10 years ago it was believed that lithium batteries only could be guaranteed to last around 8 years before they started to degrade which is why 8 years is the longest battery warranty. Now that they've been in circulation its not uncommon for a lithium battery to last double that amount before it begins to degrade especially with proper maintenance.
This means that this thing could last up to 40-50 years before it started to degrade, because the lithium battery is babied and the sodium is abused by comparison and it can take it.
The sodium battery is 30% heavier than lithium, but with the power of science they have shrunk both, and and sodium batteries can cost 30% of a lithium battery because its basically made out of waste products instead of mining them with slave labor in the Congo. Now it really comes down to reducing the size and dropping the cost even more. A good Chinese car even with 100% tariffs costs around $20k, that number will just keep dropping as they scale up and make buying an ICE vehicle seem a complete waste of money and just a status symbol.

Is #sodium safer than #lithium ? It seems like "it depends"
https://techxplore.com/news/2026-04-safer-sodium-battery-thermal-runaway.html
It seems sodium-ion can also thermal run away when puctured for example

what safety risks are associated with sodium-ion batteries?

Thermal runaway / fire: still possible (especially with flammable organic electrolytes and high states of charge), though many studies find SIBs generally show lower heat release and slower propagation than Li‑ion cells.

Electrolyte flammability and decomposition gases: conventional non‑aqueous electrolytes can ignite or produce toxic/reductive gases during abuse or overheating; nonflammable electrolytes are an active research area.

SEI instability and parasitic reactions: sodium salts and solvents can form less stable solid–electrolyte interphases than lithium systems, causing continuous side reactions... #goodbms is key (again) #need #team #electricalengineer build better #bms

Safer sodium battery eliminates thermal runaway with a heat-triggered polymer barrier

Some batteries have been known to catch fire or explode at high temperatures or when under stress. This safety concern has pushed researchers to experiment with different ways to design safer batteries that can ideally still perform reliably and efficiently. Sodium-ion batteries (NIBs) are considered a promising alternative to lithium-ion batteries, but still face safety risks, especially at high capacities. But now, a team of researchers in China has designed a new type of electrolyte for NIBs that may eliminate these risks, allowing for stable performance across a wide temperature range.

From the article:

'as solar prices continue to decline, gas and oil is (again) proved to be volatile and unreliable, and storage costs fall precipitously, wind, solar and storage will be so much cheaper than fossil fuels that they will rapidly replace them.

Only the US won't join in this bounty of dirt-cheap energy. The rest of the world will receive a huge boost to economic growth as electricity costs plunge.'

Know any jokes about Sodium? – T-shirt

A science joke about a basic element. Who says scientists can’t make jokes? An organic cotton T-shirt from our Scientist and Philosopher range so hopefully not too heavy loading on the environment compared with other materials.

Check out how these products are made using organic cotton. We need to live in not just a sustainable way but one that causes the least environmental loading on the planet. You can even send these items back to be made into new things when you have finished with them. (S&P)

Think you’re eating too much salt? Most Quebecers are, new study shows
A new study found that 82 per cent of Quebecers eat more than 2,300 mg of sodium per day — the maximum amount recommended by Health Canada. Salt, bread and cheese are top culprits.
