The Empathy Within (8 Photos)
From a quiet street in Glasgow to a sunlit wall in Madrid, these artworks remind us that empathy still lives in the small, shared moments between strangers. Each piece captures kindness — a helping hand, a warm glance, a soft connection to nature. Together, they reflect the tenderness that holds our cities together. More: Made You Smile (11 Photos) 1. Helping Hands (8 Photos)
Look down. Look up. Sometimes the city literally reaches out to grab you. We’re talking giant hands breaking through the concrete, wrapping around trees, or holding pure fire. Artists around the globe are obsessed with this shape. Why? Because hands don’t need words. They protect. They lift. They connect. These aren’t just quiet sculptures or flat paintings. These are massive urban takeovers that make you stop, stare, and feel something real. From tiny hidden stick figures to colossal […]
A pair of hands emerges from the ground. They cradle a tree, lift a person, or offer a glowing sphere of light. All over the world, street artists return to this simple, universal shape. Hands tell a story without speaking a single word. They show care, protection, and connection. When you walk past a giant […]

Social Art is a long monologue on life and art. A river whose waters mix sediments of experiences and reflections on art exhibitions and childhood memories, philosophical questions and variety show jokes, the mysticism of jazz and the happy ending of painting, and on the “etcetera” as a key to understanding existence.
Social Art is a talk given in the bar of a conceptual art museum. The museum is closed for mourning, as art has died once again (and once again, and once again). And the works have gone out to party. On the streets. Everywhere. In our heads.
You can read Social Art from cover to cover in one sitting. Or you can wander from one fragment to another. You can scan the sentences with your eyes, line by line. Or you can use Tom Marioni’s monologue as a theatrical text to be adapted to your own personal situations. You will not lack for the most varied specific circumstances, public and private, imaginary and concrete, to serve as the backdrop for the storytelling of one of the most innovative artists of contemporary thought.

La sua opera più celebre è The Act of Drinking Beer with Friends is the Highest Form of Art (1970).

Tom Marioni was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and lives in San Francisco. Linked in various ways to the events of the first generation of Conceptual Art, he founded the Museum of Conceptual Art, which brought together artistic experiences that gave rise to both a behavioral strand of North American art and expressions such as Sound Art and Relational Art. He is an artist, curator, and educator, and what distinguishes him most is the fact that he has not separated the three activities of his artistic research. His most famous work is The Act of Drinking Beer with Friends is the Highest Form of Art (1970). It intertwines many of the resolved and unresolved theoretical issues of art, not only contemporary art, such as the connections between art and life, between work and process, between production and curation, between exhibition and discourse.

(Almost 5 years ago. Derek Chauvin found guilty of 3rd degree murder …)

A mother holds her starving child in a painting by an unknown artist, found under a railway bridge. It reminds us that this hunger exists because of our world.

He watches the “bad hero” take the stage — draped in golden words, sinking deeper every night.
He sees the walls they call “progress”… and recognizes the graves beneath.
