I got word that the #publichealth #socialvulnerability index vanished from the #cdc website. I wasn't able to find the webpage online, nor the 2022 data, so I made a quick #Quarto website on #github to let everyone know that it's definitely not available so they wouldn't waste their time trying to find it anymore.

PRs are always welcome should you have additional negative examples to provide.

Improving Earthquake Early Warning Access for the Deaf Community

Earthquake early warning systems are rarely accessible to people who are deaf or hard of hearing. A group of scientists is working to change that.

The impacts of climate disruption

The Lismore floods, the Spanish floods and Hurricane Katrina show in a climate breakdown
you're on your own..

People "are fundamentally rescuing themselves...I think that's something that we see again and again, unfortunately, in the absence of effective government response....Professor Mossop says the Black Summer Fires in 2019 to 2020 also saw people being "rescued by their neighbours and not by emergency services".
Australia is expected to experience worsening disasters as climate change accelerates.

“Out of all the focus group respondents, 62% said their governments or policy makers had made no assessment of the impact of climate change on emergency services, 9% said they didn’t know, 55% said nothing had been done to prepare for the impact of climate change, and 10% didn’t know.">>

What Australia can learn from Spain's recent deadly floods

Australia is being urged to heed the lessons of Spain's devastating floods and make sure that warning systems and emergency response capabilities are up to tackling disasters that are becoming more frequent and more intense.

Designing Effective Policy Interventions on Treatable Infectious Diseases

Infectious diseases such as syphilis are highly treatable. But if ignored, they can have devastating consequences, as in the dramatic rise of congenital syphilis among newborns at the Colombia-Venezuela border. But how can health services best reach and treat populations at risk, including undocumented migrants? A multidisciplinary pilot project yields promising results that could help save lives.

Interesting read.

It screams #SocialVulnerability to me, and with that, I feel compelled to say that "social vulnerability" is so much more than people who don't speak English. There are reams of research out there about social vulnerability, and it gives #emergencymanagement planners numerous new ways to think about #risk and #preparedness. Check it out!

Historic flooding in Fort Lauderdale was a sign of things to come—a look at who is most at risk and how to prepare

When a powerful storm flooded neighborhoods in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in April with what preliminary reports show was 25 inches of rain in 24 hours, few people were prepared. Even hurricanes rarely drop that much rain in one area that fast. Residents could do little to stop the floodwater as it spread over their yards and into their homes.
