In het uitroeiingskamp van Sobibor werd tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog een van de gruwelijkste passages uit de Holocaust uitgevoerd. Op anderhalf jaar tijd tussen april 1942 en oktober 1943 werden minstens 167.000 mensen vermoord door de Duitse SS. Vanuit het Nederlandse kamp Westerbork werden 34.313 mensen naar Sobibor gedeporteerd.

October 14, 1943 - As the result of an uprising at the Sobibor extermination camp in Poland, about 300 of its Jewish prisoners escaped, though only about 50 survived until the end of the war.

Following the escape, the remaining inmates were killed and the camp was promptly closed by the Germans. Though Sobibor’s six gas chambers could exterminate 1200 people at a time, it was the smallest of the death camps.

The photo is of some of the escapees taken in 1944.

On #ThisDayInHistory in 1943, #Waldkommando at #Sobibór #DeathCamp attacked their Ukrainian guard and escaped the SS. Some were recaptured, some killed by Polish #antisemites, but others stayed free. Their bold act may have inspired the later revolt that destroyed the #Nazi camp.
