While walking the streets of Breckenridge today, the #mountains maintained a dominant presence. While planning my local hikes for the next few days, I’m also looking toward returning here this winter for #snowshoeing. Summiting to 13,000’ (4,000m) on snowshoes from the trailhead not practical for me after flying in from sea level. But there’s an interesting option of taking the ski lifts up to near one of the peaks (Peak 8), then snowshoeing up the final 800’ of elevation. #Colorado #hiking
3/ In one particularly steep section last week, the trail was staircase steep and involved using the rocks as "steps". Very easy in the summer. While encountering that section last week, I distinctly recall my difficulty in ascending/descending that section on snowshoes and, in fact, slipping and going into a short slide on my first time descending. 2/ For example, long dense fields of rocks/boulders on the trail in the summer smooth out into a smooth sloping snow "sidewalk" in the winter. Sometimes that's a good thing-- easy snowshoeing up the "sidewalk" without needing to maneuver around the boulders. However, once the terrain is very steep, it is a different story: boulders in the summer can be used as easy stepping stones. But in the winter, the snow sidewalk becomes too steep for snowshoeing. 1/ The trail that I hiked last Saturday in the White Mountains, NH, was about the sixth time I've done it -- three times in the winter and three times in the summer/fall. I couldn't help but have flashbacks throughout Saturday's summery hike about my snowshoeing experiences there and how different it is in the winter. (CONT) #mountains #hiking #snowshoeing

EIN Lieblings-Urlaubsfoto habe ich nicht, aber mit Schneeschuhen allein in der Dämmerung in Finnland herumstapfen ist eines der Highlights, die mir spontan einfallen.

"Barrier Lake & Jewel Pass hike"  Great hike to #BarrierLake lookout and back though #JewellPass trail loop.

I sat on the rock where the crow sat (in second image) to have my lunch. I had to use my fingers to eat my lunch as the crow took my fork. Great views!

Our hiking group enjoyed the approximately 12-km out-and-back trail near #SeebeAlberta. This is a very popular area for #birding, #hiking, and #snowshoeing The best times to visit this trail are March through November.

5/5 I am also now in better physical condition-- going up 3,000+ feet (900+ m) with up to 35 pounds (16 kg) strapped to me (which included 3L water and up to three types of traction) is VERY demanding!! Throughout each subsequent year, I used future snowshoeing as my motivation to increase my physical conditioning program.

This was all win-win! END

4/ Did a similar thing this recent winter (year 5), but spanning two different trails (on several separate trips), each with some steep sections as a challenge.

Conclusion--

I LOVE it! I'm so glad I ventured out of my comfort zone and kept challenging myself (slowly, systematically, and safely) to increasingly difficult experiences. I now have a good set of techniques (upon which I keep building). (CONT)

3/ In preparation, I scouted out several trails in the summer as potential candidates for #snowshoeing to the summit. My major criteria were 1) manageable water crossings in the winter and 2) class I trail with no section that would be too steep for snowshoes. I found a suitable trail for that and then summited it three times the following winter (year 4). (CONT)
