Since Monday, the #PleiadesGazetteer editorial college published 26 new and 207 updated place resources, reflecting the work of 12 people. Authored by Tom Elliott (@[email protected]) and Divya Kumar-Dumas, we now have a place resource for Mamallapuram, an ancient settlement and modern town located on the east coast of peninsular India. It is the site of a large complex of Hindu temples dating to the 7th/8th centuries CE that is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site: https://pleiades.stoa.org/places/119192778.

The city is mentioned in Tamil literature beginning in the 8th century CE. The exact location of the city's harbor and its possible identification with non-Tamil sources (especially Roman ones) remain inconclusive.
