VICTORIA. — CFA and FRV are joining fire services across Australia for Smoke Alarm Action Day on 1 June, urging Victorians to test their smoke alarms and check they are correctly installed and in working order.

Was just rudely shocked awake at 2:30am by a screaming smoke detector. No actual smoke, just a “smoke sensor error”, whatever that is. Certainly the manufacturer’s web site has no information about it. (They do have some kind of chatbot for search but you can’t use it without providing your contact info and agreeing to a huge terms and conditions, so no.)

Over the course of my life I’ve been woken up a number of times by smoke and carbon monoxide detectors with low batteries, or other non-emergencies. I have never once had one go off during waking hours. Since I’m awake 2/3 of the time, this is highly improbable. Really makes me wonder if there is a light sensor on the unit and a psychopathic hardware engineer involved.

@Pepijn Nice listing of critical factors for smoke alarms. Installed four replacement Wired/Battery interconnected detectors this past weekend for a family member. Took about an hour to install/test all (including finding and labeling power shutoff breaker) and cleanup. Well worth it as they were > 15 years old! Okay, hive mind…I need a little help! We need to replace our hardwired Nest Protects (smart smoke & CO detectors) in September because Google, in their infinite wisdom 🙄, decided to discontinue this truly top notch product just months before ours turn 10 and stop working. Aaargh!

Does anyone have a hardwired smoke/CO detector — smart or otherwise — that they would recommend?

1. The do not last as long as they promise
2. If the break you won't get any help
3. If you need replacement, they can not offer replacement that will fit into the same frame you mounted to your wall.
