History is sometimes an act of accumulation: 397 folios. Hundreds of candles. Countless tiny details.

Today’s blog post discusses reading for details that earlier editors thought didn’t matter.

And this: "A common argument for Generative AI is a promise of higher productivity. Yet productivity does not equal insight, and when kept unchecked it may hinder innovation and creativity. We do not need more papers, faster; we rather need more thoughtful, deep work, also known as slow science" (see https://osf.io/preprints/osf/2c48n for cited sources in this). I'd argue for #slowscholarship more generally.

Day 1 of the Duality@50 #SocialNetworkAnalysis conference is coming to an end. I've learnt so much, listened to brilliant talks, received great comments on my own work and had many inspiring conversations in the beautiful atmosphere of Lago Maggiore.
I've also spent several hours in bed in between for my #longCovid energy management and pacing.
Have learnt that Georg Simmel spent time here twice to rest and recuperate, so gladly continuing the tradition

Currently reading 'Wintering' by Katherine May.
Subtitle: The power of rest and retreat in difficult times.

It's an autobiographical account of a burnt-out academic realising she can't go on, also due to health reasons.

Exactly what I need right now

Sometimes, my walks lead to unexpected marvels. It started out today as a quest to find old border buildings near Moillesulaz (🇨🇭) / Moëllesulaz (🇫🇷) but they were all apparently flattened & replaced with a shiny new (& super useful!) cross-border tram & modern blocks of flats or administrative buildings. So, a frustrating start if nostalgia is your thing. But what happened next will surprise you, as they say... #BorderWalk #geography #border #borderStudies #visualMethods #SlowScholarship
Fast writing and instant communication has become built into our expectations of one another under #latecapitalist #academia. I find myself unable to keep up, which means I miss out on a lot of opportunities. But I’m grateful that my brain forces me into slowness because it makes my work better.
Fuck fast-food academia!
Fuck the neoliberal university!
Fuck ableist journals and departments!
Long live slow scholarship!

My research assistant checking in! I took the week of my conference off from writing and a week off writing to recover from the conference. Easing back in. I have feedback from my internal committee on my thesis draft. I am kicking off the last editing session slowly. I'm tired but I'm so glad that I'm done with conference planning!

Another day writing my “academic comic” on political borders, revisiting “Fenced In” in long form & extending the timeframe. Anyone have tips for not ending the day with a very stiff neck & shoulder? I’m loving the drawing process but I realize that the need to pace myself physically & the looming end-of-sabbatical-deadline aren’t the best mix…

After the double fun of flu & Christmas, both spent in a cloud of brain fog, it was good to get out to continue our delightfully erratic border walk. Rather confusingly, we started at border stone no. 1, the “other” first one, this time on the right bank. Double border stones, at the tripoint of the Canton de Vaud & Canton of Geneva (both 🇨🇭) touching France (🇫🇷). The Geneva one dates back to 1818, Treaty of Paris. #Geography #Borders #BorderWalk #SlowScholarship
@geography We meet some friends along the way: mysterious footprints (badger?), cows and lots of people on horseback. The border feels like it’s at the end of the world in the middle of rural landscapes in🇨🇭but across in 🇫🇷 it’s close to an industrial centre, power lines, a gas pipeline and roads. We end up near the cross-border nuclear research centre of CERN, and turn back. #BorderWalk #Geography #BorderStudies #Walking #SlowScholarship
