Disposable Times

I like vehicles with scars. The kind that are a little dirty, a little dented, well worn, yet utterly dependable, with an engine that’s been looked after and kept in good shape.

I like vehicles that don’t shine with flawless paint, layered with half a Saturday’s worth of waxes and creams, the kind where nobody dares eat inside.
Not the ones covered in “dashboard shine,” sitting there sparkling in the driveway, pleasing the owner’s eye, annoying the neighbour and tempting the thief.

I prefer the kind that will do a million kilometres without letting you down. And if they ever do fail (because, after all, who never has?), it won’t be the day after the warranty runs out, and not on some ordinary dry, straight road, but somewhere out there, in real hard conditions, where any polished showpiece wouldn’t even be allowed in for fear of scratching the paint or getting mud on the carpets.

Those are the kind I like. Cars… and friendships.
The long-haul kind. Maybe a little battered, maybe not much to look at, but the kind you can count on.

It seems there are fewer and fewer of them these days, because appearance and the impression of perfection matter most now, and you can’t see quality in a photograph.

These are disposable times.
As long as it looks good in pictures, that’s enough.
You can’t see quality on the internet.
