Yaanan are a curious species who are always born in sets. Each set is a single individual whose consciousness is split amongst their bodies. While their antennae and forehead-mounted psygem act as ranged neuro receivers and transmitters respectively, physical contact is needed to establish a perfect "sync", in which memories, sensations, and trains of thought become truly one.
Usually, the sets are even numbers, with the most common being simply two or four, though there theoretically is no limit.
Odd numbers are more rare, and have a greater tendency for (typically harmless) neurodivergencies.
Of the two major governing bodies of yaanan civilization, the leader of one is in fact a nearly unbelievable 21-set.
This one, however, is just a 3-set girlboygirlfailure.

Modernly, the sapient diversity of the Sunnyside Galaxy is quite limited; the hyaugara, iizhei, zeezer, bunyu, and most prominently, the tenyu are largely its only denizens.
There used to be more, but they have all become tenyu, due to the extremely potent microscopic transformative agent that literally makes the tenyu (and the bunyu) what they are.
Some traits of the former non-tenyu remain in certain populations, but in most cases, these are functionally only aesthetic deviations.
