“Ah but what do you use it for?” I hear you say.

Simple and not so simple paper calculations. For painting. And working out canvas sizes and magnification ratios.

They are quick when you know what you’re looking at. Accuracy maybe a bit less but usually I only need to know roughly what size it should be.

"Here we have Tom and Tim. They are fraternal scientists."

"Fraternal scientists?"

"Yes, they were born of the same mother, in close succession, and with a calculator in their hands."

"Strange."

"Why do you say this?"

"I would have though they would have been born with a slide rule in their mouth."

The slide rule is a great tool for teaching the relationships between numbers and functions. When all math is done by AI, will people learn why things work or how to make things work?

Do the calculation
I have accumulated quite a collection of calculators over the years, for school, for work, for fun. So long as the modern grid keeps going, they all work. But, maybe I should review the slide rule instructions, just in case. No batteries, no power, no internet. Just works.
Here's a thought: will all calculation be done by AI in the future and, how should that figure in to math education? Teach analog technique.

You Need A Kitchen Slide Rule

me, using a slide rule instead of any of several other calculators, because it's fun

today im using the 6" pocket model, which isnt suuper precise but it's Good Enough for working examples from this book

Because I'm super geeky like that, I've started using a circular #SlideRule when I score #baseball games -- I set the ballpark capacity on the D scale, the attendance on the C scale, and look under the 1 on the D to read the percentage of capacity on C. Accurate enough for my scoresheets.

Just went back and filled that percentage to all the college and #WorldBaseballClassic games I've scored this year.

The Zero-Power Flight Computer

In the early days of aviation, pilots or their navigators used a plethora of tools to solve common navigation and piloting problems. There was definitely a need for some kind of computing aid that …
