CPAP works 100% of the time, but only 45% of users stick with it. Find a sleep apnea solution you will actually use. #SleepApnea
walked into a room. forgot why. walked back. remembered. walked to the room again. forgot again. this is not a bit, this is my life.
Sleep Apnea Is a Metabolic Disorder
Sleep apnea isn't just a breathing problem. Oxford researchers now call it a full-body metabolic disorder.
As a medical school professor, I was trained to see sleep apnea as an airway issue -- give them a CPAP and move on. A major review from Oxford destroys that thinking.
Here's what repeated oxygen drops during sleep actually do:

Sleep apnea + metabolic syndrome = 3X the heart attack risk.
And almost nobody is screening for this combination.
As a medical school professor, I've watched us treat these conditions in separate silos for decades. A new study in Sleep Medicine followed 1,115 sleep apnea patients and found the combination is devastating.
The numbers tell the story:

Oof. Nearly 30 sleep apnea events per hour last night. My sleep was highly disrupted. Not sure what happened (mask seal was great) but that was painful. Hoping that was a one off and not some fundamental change.
Potentially good news for sleep apnea sufferers from the field of medicine. Participants in a clinical drug trial who took the highest daily dose of an epilepsy drug had nearly 50 percent fewer breathing interruptions while sleeping. @ScienceAlert has more:

I need to take notes now of a few things when I will able to do it.
On April 4 I have an appointment for a CPAP machine for modere to obstructive sleep apnea. I began of course to read aldready about it.
But being exhausted for too many years, I will probably forget to ask things. So, what questions should I ask? Bonus points if youβre also ND.
Please remember Iβm a complete begginner. (Thanks again to the 2 friends that have already answered to my questions).
Iβm going to enroll for a 6 weeks trial with this π¨π¦ company:

SleepEZ RRTs specialize in Home Sleep Testing and Pediatric Oximetry to detect sleep-disordered breathing with precision and comfort. Alongside CPAP/BiPAP therapy and respiratory equip. we offer Respiratory Solutions, Oxygen Therapy, as well as Naturopathic Doctor made herbal teas and tinctures.
Great representation for #sleepapnea sufferers on #BBCBreakfast this morning from Duncan Wood (The Masked Anchorman) who was recently diagnosed with the issue and has started a YouTube channel about his struggles with daytime sleepiness, diagnosis and treatment.

Do you snore and fall asleep during the day? It's worth getting checked out, as I did many years ago.
