It's still Thursday in my hemisphere but I have this ready to go, so...

Tribe, “Here at the Home” from “Abort,” 1991

Here's another #Boston staple from the #90s: Hooky, crunchy - you can sneer to it and boy how we loved sneering.

This track was actually the title track on Tribe's first, independently released album that never reached my ears, but it sure reached someone’s, because a year later they released Abort on #SlashRecords with a reformulated and reshuffled track list.

The melody has a touch of menace but also the whimsy of a child’s toy. The chorus makes you want to yell along with it, but it still keeps that hook.

I remember this track, the title track “Abort,” and “Joyride” from this album getting regular radio play in the Boston area, and they all leap from the speakers and grab you.

This is some of the most satisfying #RockMusic created - all it’s trying to do is scratch that itch, and it does.

X, Los Angeles, 1980 on Slash

Debut LP from John Doe, Exene Cervenka, DJ Bonebrake and Billy Zoom. Produced (as were the next three X albums) by The Door’s keyboardist Ray Manzarek.

I was just mentioning Slash! records earlier this week – “Los Angeles” was a cut on the Slash! sampler Early Sessions and that was my intro to the band. Great LA punk band rooted in a kind of punk folk / Americana.

My copy—via Slipped Disc at a record fair at Mill No 5 in Lowell MA—is a 1983 speciality pressing with the Slash blood labels.

Los Lobos, By the Light of the Moon, 1987 on Slash Records

Los Lobos’ follow on record to How Will The Wolf Survive?. which was produced by T-Bone Burnett.

I love the Slash! records catalog from the 80s – great Americana tinged but contemporary music – and this is no exception.

My copy—via Slipped Disc at a record fair at Mill No. 5—is an Allied pressing from the late 80s – in great shape with the original inner liner and hype sticker.

Violent Femmes, Violent Femmes (box set), 2024 on Craft Recordings

This was one of my favorite albums of the 1980s (it came out on Slash Records in 1983), and I’ve been looking forever for a decent copy on vinyl. This box set, as you’d expect from Craft, is amazing. It includes a newly remastered version of the self-titled album itself, plus additional LPs of demos and live recordings, and a 7″ single: Ugly / Gimme the Car.

When it was first released, the […]
