The system of education educates us for the system

School prepares us for our later life in society and we could say it is a small version of it. It provides us with specific tools, knowledge and ideology to live in a capitalist society. To say it plainly, the students of today are the workers of tomorrow. The schools, the military and university create people ready to join an economy, carrying the appropriate ideas in order to be well behaved and not react to the oppression they face or that around them. The system of education educates us for the system – but what exactly do they teach us?

Schools teach nationalism: nationalism in south Cyprus is part of everyday life. They want us to not see the real problems around us, and ponder on the so called great past of the nation. To feel part of the national community, and recreate eternally the family religion homeland model. Nationalism is an ideology of submission to the orders of the rulers. The national interest is theirs, not ours. The oppressed of this world have a common fate and common struggles to give, against states and bosses that fill our heads with nationalist nonsense. In Cyprus especially, where the communities suffered so much from the conflicts, school nationalist propaganda by the state is an attempt to create disciplined, greekhearted idiots.

Schools teach competition: in an oppressive condition such as 6 hours at the desk or 8 hours on the job, community and resistance are important weapons. In school they teach us that it’s everyone against everyone. In a way, everyone who is in the same position as us is our competitor, and we fight for better grades or a better salary later.
