AGI - Al Bioparco di Roma sono nati due gemelli di tamarino imperatore, tra le scimmie più piccole e peculiari esistenti. I genitori Sissi e Franz si prendono cura giorno e notte dei cuccioli, nati lo scorso 19 febbraio e di cui ancora non è possibile stabilire il sesso, sotto l'occhio vigile della sorella maggiore Sofi, nata dalla stessa coppia nel 2021.
"Si tratta di un primate monogamo", spiega la presidente del Bioparco di Roma Paola Palanza, etologa e professore ordinario presso l'Università di Parma. "Entrambi i genitori si prendono cura dei neonati, ma in particolare il papà, che li accudisce e li trasporta sulla schiena, consegnandoli alla mamma per le poppate. La mamma sembra quasi ignorare i piccoli - continua Palanza - indaffarata a pulirsi e specialmente a mangiare: gravidanza e allattamento di due gemelli richiedono infatti un grande sforzo metabolico a un animale così piccolo e la mamma da sola non riuscirebbe ad allevarli. In questa specie è essenziale che il padre sia presente e si prenda cura dei neonati, che altrimenti non potrebbero sopravvivere".
Le cure paterne nei mammiferi
E aggiunge: "nei mammiferi la monogamia e le cure paterne sono molto rare, presenti in meno del 5% delle specie, incluso l'Uomo, e si sono evolute dove la cura di entrambi i genitori era essenziale per garantire la sopravvivenza dei piccoli. Quando esistono cure paterne, nel maschio si evolvono anche particolari meccanismi del cervello che favoriscono il legame con la partner e con i figli. In particolare, cambia la distribuzione dei recettori di ossitocina e vasopressina, spesso chiamati recettori dell'amore".
L'origine del nome tamarino imperatore
Il tamarino imperatore deve il suo nome ai lunghi e vistosi baffi bianchi arditamente curvati verso l'alto, come era prerogativa un tempo delle altezze reali e imperiali. Guglielmo II, imperatore della Germania, sfoggiava baffi simili; per questo motivo alla specie venne dato per scherzo l'appellativo di "imperatore", ma il nome piacque così tanto agli zoologi che divenne definitivo.
Dal peso di circa mezzo chilo, appartiene alla grande famiglia dei Callitricidi (dal greco: "colui che ha una bella chioma") che comprende 42 specie distribuite nelle foreste del nord ovest della Colombia, gravemente minacciate dalla deforestazione e dai cambiamenti climatici.

At the Rome Bioparco, two emperor tamarins were born, among the smallest and most peculiar primates. The parents, Sissi and Franz, care for the infants day and night, born on February 19th and whose sex is still unknown, under the watchful eye of the older sister, Sofi, born from the same pair in 2021.
“This is a monogamous primate,” explains Paola Palanza, president of the Rome Bioparco, an ethologist and professor at the University of Parma. “Both parents care for the newborns, but particularly the father, who tends to them and carries them on his back, delivering them to the mother for feeding. The mother seems almost to ignore the little ones – continues Palanza – busy cleaning and especially eating: pregnancy and breastfeeding of two twins require a great metabolic effort for an animal so small and the mother alone would not be able to raise them. In this species it is essential that the father is present and cares for the newborns, otherwise they could not survive.”
Paternal Care in Mammals
“In mammals, monogamy and paternal care are very rare, present in less than 5% of species, including humans, and have evolved where the care of both parents was essential to ensure the survival of the young. When paternal care exists, special mechanisms in the brain also evolve in the male that favor the bond with the partner and the children. In particular, the distribution of oxytocin and vasopressin receptors – often called ‘love receptors’ – changes.”
The Origin of the Name Emperor Tamarin
“The emperor tamarin owes its name to its long, conspicuous white whiskers boldly curved upwards, a characteristic formerly associated with royal and imperial heights. Wilhelm II, Emperor of Germany, sported similar mustaches; for this reason the species was jokingly given the appellation of ‘emperor,’ but the name pleased zoologists so much that it became permanent.”
Weighing approximately half a kilo, it belongs to the large family of Callitrichidae (from Greek: "one who has a beautiful tuft") which includes 42 species distributed in the northern west forests of Colombia, severely threatened by deforestation and climate change.
