A ★★★★★ review of Magnificent Obsession (1954)

Another moving, human drama with loads of emotional impact. Signed Sirk. (Sirk, the magnificent) Jane Wyman plays her part with sincerity and subtlety. How can you not care for her character Helen Phillips. Rock Hudson gives his character power and life. Actually, what's not to like about this one? As a Sirk fan I might be biased, but I'm also right about this (yet) another grand piece of CINEMA. Richard Brody (The New Yorker): "Every step depends on stifled emotions and closely guarded secrets, resulting in a buildup of operatic passion that endows everyday gestures and inflections with grandeur and

#Fassbinder on #Sirk :
"In Douglas Sirk's movies the #women think. I haven't noticed that with any other director. With any. Usually the women just react, do the things women do, and here they actually think. That's something you've got to see. It's wonderful to see a woman thinking. That gives you hope. Honest."

for a long time the book "#sirk on sirk" was a kind of bible for me. i loved his movies so much, colorful and intensely felt melodramas that were disparaged as "women's pictures" in the early 50s. but then near the 80s he had a renaissance. critics all over were praisingly pointing out the "class subversion" and irony they saw in his movies. the "women's picture," they said, was a clever way for him to subvert norms of suburbia and american life, etc.

each #christmas i see my own crying face reflected in a television screen; #sirk
