Sinéad O'Connor career had already gone off the rails by this point, more or less, after the famous photo-tearing scene, and her third album being a collection of oldies with an anti-church rant at the end, and "Universal Mother" was weird and scattered, but this song is a powerful cry of outrage against an abusive mother (apparently autobiographical) with a rolling bassline, and has long been one of my favourites of hers.
