Probably not the easiest book to read when dealing with a burnout, but The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez is something quite special. There are multiple perspectives, narratives and layers to this story involving a god escaping captivity and her terrifying three children, and the guard and outcast who end up going along. The writing is beautiful and a lot of this book feels like someone telling me a mystic folk story while still feeling intimate.

I've been taking my sweet time and I'm just now reaching the final stretch of their five day journey. I'm invested in seeing how this will end!

First of all, the narrative is layers on layers on layers; there are several stories going on at the same time, from 2nd person POV modern time to the historical/fantastical story with 1st person POV thoughts thrown in the middle. I don’t think I’ve ever read anything structured like this, and yeah, I get why it turns people off. But something about this reminded me of A Hundred Years of Solitude (the richness and meandering narration) and it didn’t bother me. Also, I think this works better as read text instead of audio.
