I finally finished the book!!! Only took me like 2 months…
The Spear Cuts Through Water by Simon Jimenez is about two men shepherding a God and falling in love along the way. I don’t really know how to describe the plot of this book without spoiling it. It’s full of folklore, the history of culture and objects, the way stories are warped and twisted across generations… it’s about war and desperation, about the human condition in all of its forms… and the prose is so poetic.
The storytelling in this book is insanely good. This is genuinely beautifully written, and the best book I’ve read since I started reading again in 2022. It’s definitely slow-paced but so worth it. The threads of the story can appear to be all over the place throughout the book but they come together in the end in a very satisfying ending. The only bad part about the book is that it ended… I miss the characters already… and I feel like rereading it even though I just finished it. This is definitely a book I’m going to revisit often.
I think the only criticism I have about this book is that the narrative is a little confusing until the last quarter of the book, but that doesn’t have to be bad either.
I cannot recommend this book more to everyone. Please read this!! 🥺
