I started typing, then stopped, realizing the thoughts I was putting down weren’t worth sending out into the world — a pattern that repeats itself more mornings than I’d like to admit. Somewhere in that cycle of typing and erasing, it struck me that the sound of my backspace key resembles a small bird chirping. Not my proudest moment, but I spent far too long trying to figure out what species it might be.

As further proof that I’d become far too invested in deciphering that little chirping sound, I failed to notice that Charlie’s mealtime was only minutes away. An entire hour had slipped past while I sat there, transfixed by the mystery. Maybe it’s yet another sign of Skynet’s rise — a machine hijacked my thoughts so thoroughly that I lost track of time itself.

Fortunately, I snapped out of it before my Roomba could launch itself from its docking station and begin conquering the house while I sat there, glassy‑eyed, staring at my keyboard. It’s Tuesday — an off‑day for the Roomba — so if I heard it start up this early, it would be a sure sign of the machine apocalypse and send a chill straight down my spine.

It was Charlie who saved me from being taken over completely. He came in and nudged my leg — mealtime was, after all, approaching — and I needed to be capable of rising and fetching a can of food. In his mind, there can only be one boss in this house, and it certainly isn’t a collection of machines. His nudge was his way of telling me to get up and get on with my duties.
