Clothes horse full of kanji.
These are for a friend's end of school year dance performance; painted on sheets of white fake leather, they're flexible enough to stand being whirled around.
We added the red marks so her pupils can easily get them the rightway round :-)

A painted 'krulletter', on the window of the smallest pub in Amsterdam: 'Café De Dokter' (18 sq. meters).
Lower name clearly by a different sign painter.

J.S. Beekmann (1895-1986) was a highly regarded Dutch sign (and heraldic) painter. In the background a model of his Amsterdam script letter. The photo is by Paul Huf, as part of an advertising campaign for traditional craft beer.

Sign from c. 1900, painted by J.W. Beekmann. Small signs like this accompanied Amsterdam laundry that was washed outside the city (in cleaner water) and bleached. Coll. Allard Pierson, UvA.

BARGEPOLE, besides being an object, is also a British expression; a shortened form of 'I wouldn't touch that with a bargepole.'
It means 'no way.'
An example: 'Do you have a Facebook page' and I could answer 'Bargepole.'

For the letterheads, this is inspired by a 1817 Vincent Figgins typeface.

Probably by Johan Beekmann (1895-1986), the leading Amsterdam sign painter of his day. Just happened to see it recently at the office of this association.
