#MondayMourning: Shiva (also spelled shivah), known as "sitting shiva"
A seven-day period of mourning following the burial of a Jewish person.
When the immediate family sits shiva, they observe a number of religious traditions, including wearing their kriah ribbon or torn clothing, staying at home to receive visitors (no working at jobs), covering mirrors, lighting candles, reciting the Kaddish prayer, forgoing personal grooming or makeup (basic hygiene is okay), wearing leather shoes, eating meals of condolence prepared by neighbors or extended family, and sitting on low stools. Anything usually done for fun or comfort is prohibited (that means no marital relations, either). These rules do not apply on the Sabbath.
