SHEL SILVERSTEIN
Inside Shel Silverstein
1970 U.S. reissue

A record (and artist) with very deep roots from my childhood.

I (like MANY others) grew up on the holy trifecta of Silverstein’s books; Where The Sidewalk Ends, A Light In The Attic, and Falling Up.

I was completely unaware that he was a musician and had albums until I was in my late teens, when I started seeing them in record stores and thrift shops.

Inside… is a reissue of his 1962 album Inside Folk Songs, and the material has the same quirky, humorous and biting humor as the poems from his books.

In fact, two of these songs ARE in Where The Sidewalk Ends; “Boa Constrictor” and “The Unicorn”, the former which was covered by Johnny Cash.

To this day, whether it’s his albums or books, Shel still makes me happy.

"A Boy Named Sue" is a song written by #ShelSilverstein and made famous by #JohnnyCash. Cash recorded the song live in concert on February 24, 1969, at California's #SanQuentinStatePrison for his #AtSanQuentin album. Cash also performed the song (with comical variations on #theOriginal performance) in December 1969 at #Madison Square Garden. The live San Quentin version of the song became Cash's biggest hit on the #Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Since it's a cold and snowy day, and I'm still playing with T+L inks, here's some Shel Silverstein to show how they look in writing on Tomoe River paper.

Every one is a stub or flex nib. From the top down:

- Fomalhaut in FPR Jaipur v2 w/EF UltraFlex
- Aldebaran in the same type, but reversed
- Regulus in TWSBI ECO 1.1 Stub
- Antares in TWSBI ECO 1.1 Stub
- Aldebaran again, but not reverse
- E=mc² in Prera CM
- Quantum in Parker Vector FI

Today in Writing History September 25, 1930: Shel Silverstein, American author, poet, illustrator, and songwriter was born (d. 1999). He is perhaps most remembered today for his amusing children’s poetry and fiction, like “The Giving Tree.” However, he also wrote many songs like "One's on the Way" and "Hey Loretta" (which were hits for Loretta Lynn), and "25 Minutes to Go," about a man on Death Row, and "A Boy Named Sue," both made famous by Johnny Cash. He also wrote "The Unicorn," which The Irish Rovers made famous. He also wrote many songs about drugs and sex, like “I Got Stoned and I Missed It,” “Quaaludes Again,” “Masochistic Baby,” and “Freakin’ at the Freaker’s Ball.”

Okay, so Tune Tuesday's theme is "My Golden Oldie" - your oldest favorite song.

So, I am not sure if this is fav oldest recorded song or just your oldest favorite song...so, I'm going to give you both.

Oldest song that is a favorite, "How Great Thou Art." This classic hymn was written in 1885 by Carl Boberg and translated to English by Stuart K. Hine in 1949. Here's a recorded version from Elvis Presley https://song.link/i/402051946

Oldest favorite recorded song? As silly as it is...Johnny Cash doing the Shel Silversteen classic "A Boy Named Sue" (1969). https://song.link/us/i/251002659
