Photographs and information on the Lioness Charter Night in July 1982: An 'Expression of Interest' evening was held in the Pipe Band Hall on 18 June 1982, with a very good attendance. A decision to continue was made by holding a meeting on 2 July 1982, to further discuss the formation of a Lioness Club. As can be seen by the above photos, 33 ladies all agreed to proceed (but I can see 34 names) and then an election of officers was held, fees discussed and the adoption of a Constitution and Bylaws were established. The local Lions Club appointed Liaison officers Gordon Weir and Ken Geeson. The Lions Club helped with a donation to get the Lionesses started and the two Clubs were to work to compliment each other, towards a common purpose. The Lionesses 2nd Bulletin was printed, minus a cover, but already the new Club was well underway. A Club Competition was held to find the Bulletin Cover and the Club Banner would also feature the same design. Two designs were taken to Cissie O'Brien with the end design being a deer sitting under a native tree, with Te WaeWae Bay in the background. Ideas for projects, fundraising and ways to help the community began from this point. Along the way, the club lost its Lioness name, becoming the Tūātapere Waiau Valley Lions Club in 1992, 10 years after it opened. Sadly, due to a lack of numbers, the club was closed down completely in 2015. We see President at this time, Wendy Knowler relating in a news article of the day: "the club had made a significant contribution to the western Southland community. Over the years we have delivered meals on wheels to the elderly, given books to babies born in the district, held quiz nights, held book sales, cooked at Borland Lodge for Youth groups, donated money to various community projects and supported the youth of the district. We have also held an annual golf tournament on Waitangi Day, which allowed us to donate more than $32,000 to Hospice Southland over the years." Those present at Tūātapere Lioness Charter Night in July 1982 were: Back row, left to right - Bernadette Harvey, Elizabeth Evans, Pat Griffen, Margaret Faulkner, Jenny Faulkner, Shirley Whyte, Anita Geeson, Paula Sanford. Middle row, left to right - Babette Kenneally, Rata Watson, Violet Johnson, Ashley Mills, Margaret Thomas, Joanne Walker, Ann Dyhrberg, Pat Bryan, Dorothy Horrell, Valerie Scott, Joy Green, Gloria Sutherland, Brenda Harvey. Front row, left to right - Noeline Campbell, Valerie Weir, Isobel Fraser, Lorna McDowall, Jill Mortimer, Jean Evans, Eileen Tillson, Helen Griffin, Joy Muldrew, Linda Peek, Connie Boyd, Carol Erskine, the Lions District Governor and Local Lions President Don Egerton. The donor noted two things specifically when passing on these really wonderful photos and attached information. The first, was that they were so very surprised that so many women turned up to support the Lionesses, in such a small town and district. The second was that many of these great women have now passed on and it is lovely they can be now remembered for their service in this way, with this archive entry. I note that there are more photos on the Lioness Club to come soon, so if you are interested in seeing this, please watch out for them to go up. There will also be a lot more photos and information still coming in the future on the local Tūātapere Lioness Club. In the meantime, it would be wonderful if more people contributed memories, photos and other memorabilia to add to the story and history of it. If you can help with this, please comment in the section under this image, or contact us. PLEASE NOTE: This photograph of the people above is shared publicly in this archive, as this was a publicly advertised event, so privacy rules do not apply. However, the photo is still under Copyright, but permission to share was given by the donor, who was a President of the Lioness Club.
