For Chinese New Year, I am reading the New Years extra story in the back of Stars of Chaos 5 by Priest. #shaPoLang
Happy New Year!
#ShaPoLangI've finished Vol.1 of #ShaPoLang. I'm really intrigued by the portrayal of Gu Yun's disability. Both how he handles it and how Chang Geng's perception of it changes over the years.
Although confusing Chang Geng over his actual health status might be Gu Yun's plan, Chang Geng's initial reaction is so typical in general.
Chang Geng's mistrust and doubt is what I've perceived irl a lot whenever people talk about and perceive people with chronic (pain) conditions or invisible disabilities, especially if they aren't constant but come in bouts or ebb and flow.
At the same time, I'm also intimately familiar with Gu Yun's desire to push away the reality of his limitations for as long as he can. I think that is also very typical and frequent in people with disabilities or chronic conditions.
This might very well be my favorite part about Vol.1.
"Some wish to ... expand the total size of the pie and thereby increase their own share. These people may lay the foundation of a prosperous nation and peace for the people. Others wish to stand against the flow of progress. Their own portion is already moldering, yet they want to hoard even more to molder along with it. These people attract naught but disaster. "

Oki doki, SPL vol 5 done. The main story was a bit rushed and frankly, I couldn't be bothered with all the extras (16 extras! that's an overkill). Anyhoo, my thots here:
4/5: The final volume of Stars of Chaos kicks off straight from the big bang where vol 4 left off and then it’s just full speed ahead. The main story is about a half of this and then there are…*counts* 16 extras! Sheesh. The Northern barbarian tribes have been defeated but there’s still the foreign Far Western enemy with whom especially Gu Yun grapples until the bitter end. His disabilities finally get the better of him but he doesn’t let them stop him, instead he ups the ante and goes full obnoxious mode, exasperating his subordinates (and pretty much everyone he comes in contact with).
