Kirk Douglas is just so damn good in this movie. #SevenDaysInMay #TCMParty

One slight error in the portrayal of Kirk Douglas's colonel character leaving Fredric March's President character: the colonel would salute the President when leaving, but the President, as a civilian, should not return the salute. I do wonder if that was intentional.

We have Reagan to thank for the odd custom of Presidents returning salutes. I went into the air force at the end of his presidency, and the etiquette was explained to me clearly when VP Bush visited.

When I got to know senior commanders, I was surprised how realistically relationships between staff members was portrayed in #SevenDaysInMay. Serling knew his stuff, or the source novel gave him a good basis in the script.
There was a time, as a kid, when I thought the one Navy admiral declining to be in the "betting pool" without blowing the whistle was unrealistic in the US armed forces. Then I went into the air force and realized there are a lot of folks like that in command positions. #SevenDaysInMay #TCMParty
#SevenDaysInMay is based loosely on the nutcase USAF General Curtis LeMay, who admitted to another general that were WW2 to have gone the other way, they'd be tried as war criminals because of their firebombing campaigns against civilians. #SevenDaysInMay is also the reason every building the military has is numbered and accounted for. No new buildings can be erected without express Congressional approval. You'll understand why as the movie goes on, if you've never seen it. #TCMParty
I was delighted to join Matt for another episode of the #TimeEnoughPodcast, discussing the #RodSerling penned film, #SevenDaysInMay. After watching, I'm convinced he and #GeneRoddenberry shared a time machine because it's entirely too prescient. #TwilightZone #nerdlyfe https://share.transistor.fm/s/261e751b

Rutherford Institute

The generals have been summoned—at taxpayer expense.
Trump has already said he’ll fire the generals he doesn’t like.

Is this a loyalty test? A purge? A shift to turn the military inward on the American people?

The Rutherford Institute has warned for years about the danger of military power being bent to political ends. Today could mark another step down that road.

Wake up, America.

Crazy coincidence that we just watched the classic movie "Seven Days in May" this past week, about an attempted coup by American military leaders seeking to install a cult of personality.

Then there's this political rally of US military leaders today with unhinged politicians. One can imagine a remake of that movie where all the roles are flipped and you're rooting for a different ending.

C'mon #Hollywood - what an opportunity!

#SevenDaysInMay

Yes absolutely. Referred to it in a text this week. Very topical, unfortunately. Except we are living the, "coup plotters take over in the next election" bad alternate ending.

The scene of Douglass as General Scott and Frederick March as the President was one take, because it was shot in the actual Oval Office because Frankenheimer's previous film, "The Manchurian Candidate," was reputedly one of JFK's favorites and he allowed brief access to the WH for the movie.
