Olfaction is mediated by ciliated sensory neurons, but how olfactory cilia and sensory neuron differentiation is regulated has remained obscure. This study of zebrafish and mice shows that the forkhead domain transcription factor Foxj1 is critical for olfactory cilia and sensory neuron differentiation.
