According to famous lexicographer Susie Dent, an adult English speaker has an average active vocabulary of around 20,000 words and a passive one of about 40,000 words. This means that an average adult can readily recall and use around 20,000 English words as well as recognize and know the meaning of approximately 40,000 words but unable to use them. The English language is made up of almost a million words, which means an average adult’s word knowledge is puny, to say the least.
