Primates were taught to communicate by means of a lexigram board, a computerized array of keys labeled with lexigrams. Von Glasersfeld coined the term "lexigram" in 1971, created the first 120 of them, and designed the grammar that regulated their combination. This artificial language was called Yerkish in honor of Robert M. Yerkes, the founder of the laboratory within which the lexigrams were first used.

Toki Pona (in Toki Pona it means good language or simple language) is a constructed (made-up) language. Sonja Lang (in past time Sonja Elen Kisa), Canadian translator and linguist, made the language. It is based on simple ideas that are known to all cultures. It is not created to be an international auxiliary language (a language for communication between people speaking different languages). It is meant to test ideas about minimalism and pidgins. It is influenced by Taoist ideas. It has only 120 root words, although there is over 50,000 different possible combinations. Toki Pona relies very heavily on expressing ideas by combining root words. For example, jan pona means friend in Toki Pona (literally it means: good person).

Das Ziel von toki pona ist dagegen der Minimalismus. Die Anzahl der verwendetetn Wörter wurde stark eingeschränkt und werden ausserdem nicht in ihrer Form verändert. Es sind z.Z. (2003) nur 120 Wörter. Dies ist möglich, da diese Wörter oft mehrdeutig sind und ausserdem je nach Position im Satz die Wortart verändern können. Um etwas genauer zu beschreiben kann man Wörter kombinieren.

Toki Pona ist eine von Christian Richard erfundene Sprache, die mit 120 Wörtern und 14 Lauten auskommt. Die Sprache wurde nach dem Muster von Pidginsprachen aufgebaut. Die kleine Anzahl von Wörtern wird ausgeglichen durch deren weite bildhafte Bedeutung. Die Wortarten werden nicht durch Endungen unterschieden, sondern durch die Satzstellung (Subjekt, Prädikat, Objekt). Bei der dritten Person steht vor dem Prädikat ein Partikel: »li«. Das direkte Objekt wird durch die Voranstellung eines »e« gekennzeichnet.

Why does a language with only 120 words and one tense need at least two irregular verbs and two exceptions to the rule on subject-verb linkage?

In any case, what good is a language where you can't even tell a joke whose punchline is "Mister, that's the first time I've ever heard that verb used in the pluperfect subjunctive!"?
