One of they drawbacks supermarkets have in refusing to employ enough people, is that things get forgotten. Simple things, like making sure the produce on the shelves is within the legal sell by dates.
Today, in Bremen, with a sell by date from two months ago. Not exactly a best seller, but I wanted it to make cranberry sauce. The manager, when someone admitted they have a manager, refused to sell them to me.

On September 28th Governor Gavin Newsom signed legislation making California the first state to ban sell-by dates. Assembly Bill No. 660 will take effect on July 1, 2026, banning the use of "sell-by" dates and standardizing language for date labels to reduce food waste, fight climate change, and save consumers money.
