As a #selfhoster I'm a frequent cheap #VPS renter.. A nifty tip that I noticed is that to be economical - jumping ship to another provider pays off more than loyalty to the same provider!

Newer providers tend to provide more competetive offers with the present markup (with tech prices constantly going down - Moore's law anyone).

I know reliability may have to be sacrificed with newer providers, but this is a hobby anyway..

I was tired of switching the environment variables to make ollama connect to right machine. https://github.com/anantshri/script-collection/blob/master/Shell/ollama script now does that for me in one shot. I interact with ollama command, it intelligently picks the server in order of availability.

@wq yes, this is what I’m hoping. That Prometheus + a bazillion other things is ridiculous overkill for what a #selfhoster needs I think.

IT-Connect
Question for #fedi and other #selfhoster s, do you just use your home IP address, or do you use some sort of vpn or tunneling situation (like cloudflare)? Are there risks associated with rawdogging the internet as a hoster that are different from doing so while browsing normally?

🧱 Install it as a native Node.js package

Okay, I've got a question to anyone who is a more experienced #sysadmin or #selfhoster than me: I'm currently self-hosting Umami as a fun side project for website analytics. I embed a snippet of JS in my personal website, this makes a request to an endpoint of my instance of Umami which therefore needs to be publicly accessible.

Umami also exposes a web interface where I can look at all the statistics and whatnot but since it's the same service, it's also open to the internet. I'd rather not expose the web interface (with a login page) to the internet, if I can avoid it.

Does anyone have an idea of something clever than I can do to mitigate this? I don't have a stable public IP address so IP allowlisting doesn't seem to be an option.

P.S.: If I'm being totally stupid and there's an obvious solution, please don't hesitate to tell me, I'd really like to be wrong here.

Umami

Umami is a simple, fast, privacy-friendly alternative to Google Analytics.

Even a #selfhoster needs to be prepared for a newborn baby. For example I installed my own #Immich instance for a photo backup and album shares among the family.
I am back online! 🎉
On friday at cca 12:00 we had a partial electricity outage in half of the city of #Prague and several other areas in #Czechia
The electricity came back on friday at 16:00.
But internet? #Vodafone was fixing it in my area until now, Sunday 16:30.
For a #selfhoster like me is internet outage quite annoying, but now I am back online.
