Two Sulawesi highlands giants in one plant — this is *Nepenthes tenuis × peltata*, a seedgrown cross from Taerwe Tropicals that combines the dark, inky foliage of *N. tenuis* with the bold, spotted pitchers of *N. peltata*. The result is striking: deep burgundy-green leaves with a metallic sheen, and squat, heavily mottled pitchers with a thick, rolled peristome that means serious business. 🪰

Both parent species grow at high elevation on the island of Sulawesi, making this cross a true highland plant at heart — and one that rewards patience with pitchers like these.

Twee Sulawesi-hoogtegiganten in één plant — dit is *Nepenthes tenuis × peltata*, een zaadgekweekte kruising van Taerwe Tropicals die het donkere, inktzwarte blad van *N. tenuis* combineert met de opvallende, gevlekte bekers van *N. peltata*. Het resultaat is indrukwekkend: diep bordeauxgroene bladeren met een metallic glans, en gedrongen, zwaar gevlekte bekers met een dikke, opgerolde peristoom die geen genade kent. 🪰

Beide oudersoorten groeien op grote hoogte op het eiland Sulawesi, waardoor deze kruising een echte hooglandplant is — en één die geduld beloont met bekers als deze.

Hey everyone, sorry for being so quiet. But, hey, our opening day for 2026 is this Friday, May 1st!

We'll be open 9-5 Tuesday-Sunday, closed Mondays.

Pics are from today! The plants are looking great, but most of them are not yet big enough to definitively show their sex. They're (almost) all grown from feminized seeds, so will be 99+% female. If you want to get an early start or want to be sure a particular variety doesn't sell out, we've got lots of plants. If you're not in a hurry or aren't picky about flavors, give them a week or so.

The coyote’s back, and he’s here to share a cross that just got a repot and a relocate into the highland tent: Nepenthes ventricosa “red” HC A x naga! Three of the four clones we kept are shown here, matching with Embron’s coat colors and showing the variation that came out of this cross. Clone A for once actually had the best of all traits, being the most vigorous and fattest but also the darkest with a peristome that turns jet black with age. By contrast clone B is slimmer with a cherry red lip and distinct blotches on the pitcher body. Clones C and D are somewhat mini versions of the prior two but with differing shapes. These are all liable to become very large impressive plants over time, and having been in the lowland tent until now also demonstrate how extremely tolerant they are too.

My seedgrown Drosera aliciae is displaying a stunning rosette covered in sparkling dew droplets. This South African sundew shows beautiful red and green coloration across its sticky tentacles, creating an almost jewel-like appearance in the sunlight. Growing from seed means each plant develops its own unique characteristics, and this one has formed a particularly dense and colorful trap arrangement that's both beautiful and highly effective at catching small insects.

Mijn uit zaad gekweekte Drosera aliciae toont een prachtige rozet bedekt met fonkelende dauwdruppels. Deze Zuid-Afrikaanse zonnedauw vertoont mooie rood-groene kleuring over zijn kleverige tentakels, wat een bijna juweel-achtige uitstraling creëert in het zonlicht. Opgroeien uit zaad betekent dat elke plant zijn eigen unieke kenmerken ontwikkelt, en deze heeft een bijzonder dichte en kleurrijke valstructuur gevormd die zowel mooi als zeer effectief is in het vangen van kleine insecten.

A trio of complex lowland hybrids that prove a case of my expectations being completely wrong…because they’re from seeds that were fridge-stored for over 18 months before being sent to me to sow. Not many seedlings managed to get past germinating but still. And once repotted they’ve taken off.
Crosses are: N. (rafflesiana “white” x mirabilis) x (orbiculata x ampullaria “red”), (mirabilis x orbiculata) x (orbiculata x ampullaria “red), and most intriguing, x trichocarpa x (bicalcarata x maxima).

After killing the seeds the first time, second attempt has seen success: Manihot esculenta, or Cassava is now well established in the greenhouse!
A shockingly fast growing plant (these are hardly a month old if that) and rather ornamental with those strange leaves, Cassava is a South American native that has established quite a widespread usage worldwide for food. Thick starchy roots are prepared in all sorts of ways from boiled and fried as a potato-like vegetable to ground into flour or processed into that strangely textured but popular food, tapioca.
What’s rather surprising about this though, is that this is not a plant you can safely eat normally; it must be soaked or heavily boiled, because otherwise it is packed full of cyanogens, hydrogen and nitrogen-rich chemicals that when ingested, break down to release hydrogen cyanide. Even just a small amount of raw cassava may well be lethal, so it begs the question: how did people figure out that this toxic root could eventually be processed into food?
