Shellfish, worms and other animals that live in the turbulent bottom of the #WaddenSea and Delta, can take quite a beating when it comes to storms. "When restoring tidal nature, for example along the #Westerschelde, we should therefore not only create calm spots," says Lauren Wiesebron, marine ecologist at NIOZ in Yerseke, in the thesis she will defend next Monday at @utrechtuniversity

The biologically productive North Sea impacts the global climate through exchange of carbon and nutrients with the #Atlantic #Ocean. A lot of carbon dioxide (CO2) could be taken up through physical, biological and sedimentological processes. But much is still unknown. Dutch scientists investigate how big the role of the #NorthSea really is in the uptake of carbon.

In February, I started my PhD position at NIOZ with focus on "Sedimentary burial and recycling of nutrients into and within the Norwegian Trench". Soon, our ship will depart for the expedition to the North Sea. I am so excited :)

“I wanted to know how mangrovetrees hold up against storms, and if this differs between species.” With fake trees and a field campaign in China, Rosanna van Hespen found that #mangrove species differ in how much wind and waves they can withstand. Van Hespen defends her thesis today at @utrechtuniversity .

Nearly 2.5 billion years ago, seas on our planet alternately contained more or less oxygen, due to the slow "wobble" of the rotating Earth🌍 says an international research team with Margriet Lantink, Gert Jan Reichart and Frits Hilgen, among others.

A new calculation method shows that in 30 years, the estimated probability of #flooding will be 10 times higher in more than a quarter of the places studied. Just published in @Nature Climate.
