Night falls gently on the reef. The sky blazes with purple, and I swim softly in the warm water, my hands gripping my underwater housing tightly. I carefully scan every shadow, every imperceptible movement. And then I see it. That turtle swimming peacefully. It's breathtaking, as always. These images will be the last from my shoot in the Maldives for the documentary series "Animal Crowds."

in the 80s i went thru a phase of learning then doing #scubadiving . it was only short-lived, as my abject "bruce terror" simply would not go away... ironically not so much actually underwater, when my senses were filled with the awe & delight of all to see & do, but rather, back on dry land, in between dives. it just became harder & harder to overcome the dry-land mind games then, til eventually, i stopped trying, & so just totes stopped. however, in these decades-later times, when i see how popular it's become to strand divers at sea, i feel almost discriminated against that nobody stranded us back then! so not fair! #fomo !

Trying the underwater camera for the first time. Thought it was better in a diving tank in case the holder comes loose and I need to go and recover it from the bottom of the tank. Worked perfectly well though.

This is Dive4Life in Germany, you can rent the whole equipment there, use as many bottles as you want thanks to the flat rate. There are scuba and apnea divers here.

Sand tiger sharks are one of the biggest reasons North Carolina wreck diving is so iconic.

But why do they “hover” over the wrecks like that?

Because of the later entry, I knew the sun was going to be at a great angle for shooting wide angle, but I couldn't have predicted the incredible viz. We had as much viz as we could ask for and we swam over the edge, down the slope and then pretty much stayed there. The nudis were EVERYWHERE. Piles of C. verrucosa scattered between all sizes and colors of F. verrillis. My buddy pointed me to a giant Dendronotus frondosus, which was great to see for the first time in awhile. I didn't end up pulling my strobes far enough back for virtually any of my shots, but I was able to edit some nice ones. The water was very chilly, but the mild air temps and glow from an awesome dive warmed us up quickly.
