Given the current temperature in Glasgow, I figured it's worth posting this plaque I came across on Westbank Quadrant about the origins of Lord Kelvin's ground-breaking research into absolute zero while he was a professor at Glasgow University. None of it is remotely true, but it's an amusing tale nonetheless, and with the current cold snap, it feels quite plausible!

I really like #ScienceFriday, but their website https://www.sciencefriday.com/ is a rant inducing mess!

All I wanted to do was get a link to a podcast episode's page, preferably with a transcript with lots of anchor tags, to share with my brother, but no luck.

They make it so hard to find anything or get a download link, or link to a timestamp. So many podcast links just go to Apple. It is such a frustratingly useless web site. I don't want fancy tiles. I want information.

Science Friday

Brain fun, for curious people.

Even with my training in geographic information systems (GIS), it’s fascinating to hear a mathematician’s take on the challenges of depicting a 3-D object (the earth) on a 2-D surface (a map), along with other map-related issues.

In "Mapmatics," a mathematician tells the stories of how math helps us track epidemics, map the seafloor, and plot a complex delivery route.

ASHA DE VOS: Not everyone has the privilege of saying that a floating pile of whale poop was where their career kick started, but it’s pretty good story. So I’m going to go with that. And it was my Eureka moment.

#sciencefriday isn't what it used to be, sadly.

-- which was for me a #sciencenews compendium of the week.

today's edition was no news at all; a sort of remedial review of the history of genetic discovery's lopsided gender accreditation.

all for it, but not where I tune in for actual news.
