Post 3/3 👉🏼Sufficiency is not about individual sacrifice, but a collective right to a good life. To make it viable, we need enabling policies – infrastructure, services, mobility, durable goods – not moral pressure on individuals. #Transformations #SustainabilityPolicy #GoodLife #ScienceForPolicy
Hoy compartimos una carta firmada por más de 2100 científiques sobre la urgencia de alcanzar la neutralidad climática y qué representa como oportunidad en Europa.

Open letter by Scientists: Climate Neutrality is Europe's Greatest Economic Opportunity

The European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change advised that a 90%–95% net domestic reduction of greenhouse gases (GHG) until 2040 (compared to the 1990 baseline) is necessary in order to achieve climate neutrality by 2050. The political discussion is moving further away from the scientific evidence, especially in the revision of the EU climate law (2040 climate target). Ahead of the summit of Heads of state and Heads of government on 23/10/2025, we urge policymakers to stick to science and stick to Paris. The EU should have submitted its target to the United Nations already in September – in time for the 2025 UN Climate Change Conference in November. A further delay or softening should not happen.   The open letter was signed by 2178 signatories.

Conversely, analyses show that delaying or diminishing this ambition would:
❌Undermine the legal and international frameworks of the EU Climate Law and the Paris Agreement.
❌Increase significantly damage to humans and economy due to passing various tipping points
❌Jeopardize Europe's strategic position as a global leader in innovation and sustainable technology.
The scientific evidence calls for policy coherence. EU decision-makers are asked to anchor the 2040 target in the established scientific consensus ensuring Europe's safety, prosperity, and credibility.
The full open letter, detailing the scientific basis for this recommendation, is publicly available.

👉 We encourage you to read the findings and share this analysis to inform the broader policy discussion.

Aligning EU Policy with Scientific Evidence: The Case for a 90-95% Domestic Emission Reduction by 2040.

Alongside more than 2,100 scientist colleagues from across Europe, we submitted an open letter to EU heads of state and government ahead of the European Council on 23 October this week. The message, grounded in interdisciplinary research, is unequivocal:
➡️ The EU must adopt a 2040 climate target of at least 90–95% domestic reduction in greenhouse gases.

https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.17399531

The primary data points supporting this position are clear. Evidence indicates that decisive decarbonisation is not only a climate necessity but a strategic economic opportunity, as it is projected to:
✅Generate cumulative savings of €850 billion on fossil fuel imports.
✅Stimulate the creation of over two million jobs in clean industrial sectors.
✅Enhance Europe's energy independence and long-term economic competitiveness.

Welcome! You are invited to join a webinar: One Health, One Planet: Highlighting the environment in One Health policy and practice. After registering, you will receive a confirmation email about joining the webinar.

‘One Health’ is an integrated approach to optimising the health of humans, animals and ecosystems. It is supported and promoted by major bodies like the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), World Health Organization (WHO) and others. Yet, many argue that One Health has evolved to focus heavily on human health, without paying enough attention to the vital connection it has with the environment and ecosystems, on which all life depends. What is ‘One Health’, and what role does the sustainability of the environment and ecosystems play within it? How can we move One Health away from being so focused on humans and instead take a more balanced, truly interconnected approach that values all parts of the system—people, animals, and the environment? What real-world challenges stand in the way, and what could we do to overcome them?" Join us for this interactive webinar, which is free and open to all. Our panel of speakers includes leading experts on One Health, including those who recently provided scientific advice to the European Commission: • Dr Andrea Ford, Wellcome Trust Research Fellow in Humanities and Social Science, University of Edinburgh; Member of the SAPEA Working Group on One Health • Professor Joanne Cable, Head of Organisms and Environment Division, Cardiff University • Pablo Sagredo Martín, One Health Officer, United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) • Professor Lucy Robertson, Norwegian University of Life Sciences, Member of the SAPEA Working Group on One Health This webinar is a cooperation between the Scientific Advice Mechanism (SAM), Academia Europaea Hubs at Cardiff University and the University of Bergen, the Federation of European Academies of Medicine (FEAM) and Environment Platform Wales.
