We need to call them out for their selfishness.
Personally, as a senior academic hogging a lot of resource by just being employed, I feel that my duty to the discipline involves changing the norms to help future generations.
After all, there isn't anything intrinsically valuable in having a publication in Nature. It just gives that first author self-importance and a better chance of a payrise.
