#OTD July 18,1970 -- Willie Mays collects the 3,000th hit of his career with a single off Mike Wegener in the second inning of the Giants 10-1 rout of the Montreal Expos at Candlestick Park. Mays became the 10th player in major league history to reach the 3,000 hit mark. After the historic hit, the game was halted briefly for a photo op with Mays, hall of famers Stan Musial and Carl Hubbell, National League President Charles S. Feeney and former Giant outfielder Monte Irvin. Gaylord Perry scattered four hits in a complete game effort to notch his 14th win of the season and also hit his second career home run in the third inning off Wegener. #SFGiants #SayHey #GOAT
#OTD July 13, 1965 – Juan Marichal and Willie Mays lead the National League to a 6-5 win over their American League counterparts in the All-Star Game played at Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington, Minn. Marichal pitched three scoreless innings and earned game MVP honors while Mays homered, walked twice and scored a pair of runs. The win gave the National League its first-ever lead against the junior loop in All-Star game competition. #SFGiants #SayHey #DominicanDandy

Kruk: We all loved him, he was our guy. He was the guy who taught us the basket catch, and who didn’t try to catch the basket catch?

🗣️ THE POLITICRAT #podcast: Willie Mays faced racism in San Francisco—he wasn’t welcomed initially including by white Giants fans, who booed Mays when he played as a Giant in 1958-early 60s. “It only took them five years”, he said. https://tinyurl.com/mvvrtjyn

Sad to hear of Willie Mays' passing. I kept his everyday heroic example in mind during the dark days of the previous administration and the pandemic thx to having this song—"Our Song", by the great Joe Henry—in heavy rotation. May it and Willie be a bright, shining light, especially in the dark days, when next they come

"This was God's country
This frightful and this angry land
But if it's his will
The worst of it might still
Somehow make me a better man"

I had a dream last night that I was going to Willie Mays’ funeral, and I was riding with Willie’s wife, who was driving this huge 1970s land yacht. She was very old and mostly blind, and the steering in the car was totally shot, so it kind of weaved while going straight. We were in San Francisco, which is quite hilly, and I was both happy and terrified for my life. I remember wondering why they couldn’t afford a newer car. #sayHey #willieMays
