As the home of the medieval administrator Eike of Repgow, the whole village has become an open-air museum dedicated to its famous son, with many houses featuring grand murals depicting #medieval life, painted by a local artist.
Eike of Repgow is famous for compiling the #Sachsenspiegel ("Saxon Mirror"), a code of law, in the 13th century. It was the first comprehensive law book not written in Latin and its influence can still be found in modern German and Dutch law.
One of the most famous proverbs originating from the Sachsenspiegel and still used today is "Wer zuerst kommt, mahlt zuerst" – First come, first served, or literally: "Who comes first, grinds first". Back then, it was a rule for the order for grinding of corn by a miller, but, as we all know, it is still used as a rule of habit.
