Sawmilling Redwood Boards

Just finished milling 50 boards from a massive redwood trunk I brought from Napa to Salem.
These boards will become benches and gardening builds in my greenhouse — the natural patina and lightness of redwood make it ideal for outdoor woodworking projects.
Took about two hours to mill and get everything squared up. More to come as I plane and build!

Of course now you'll be wondering what a Hewsaw is.

It's a fully automated, computer controlled and configurable sawmill.

First there's four large cutting heads (two per axis) that simply chip away the round part of the log, there are no flitches cut, just woodchips which are typically burnt to heat the drying kilns.

Then there's an adjustable stack of circular saws, cutting the shaped log into planks or beams.

The rest are just feeders and guides, which as you can see are also configurable in case you want to cut curved logs as in this animation:

Woodland Mills HM122 Anniversary Edition Portable Sawmill - Overview (2020)

Four years ago, I set up three bases and concreted them 80 cm deep into our meadow for our Woodlandmill HM 126 14HP band saw. I dug the holes by hand. For the concrete, I used trass-lime-cement with different sand grain sizes ranging from 0 to 32 mm. The electric motor of the concrete mixer was no longer working, so I mixed the concrete by hand in about 30 wheelbarrow loads with a shovel (ca. 10load per base). It was hard work. Our band saw has been standing firmly and accuratly ever since on iron rails. We still need to use it more so that the investment pays off. Larch and Arolla pine are precious timberwood. Maximum cutting lenght (with two extension) is 7 meters.

Switching to gaming mode on the Steam Deck the game is now slower.

Showing Item Frame recipe. Requires the "Sawmill" crafting station.

I then go to my Sawmill and I craft 34 item frames
