Die Oper basiert lose auf dem Leben von Mohandas K. Gandhi und ist der zweite Teil von Glass’ „Portrait Trilogy“, einer Opernreihe über Männer, die die Welt verändert haben, zu der auch Einstein on the Beach und Akhnaten gehören. Philip Glass’ Stil kann allgemein als minimalistisch beschrieben werden, aber die Musik in Satyagraha ist etwas expansiver, als dieser Begriff vermuten lässt.
