MULTIPLE PEOPLE RESCUED DURING HEAT WAVE SATURDAY IN SYCAMORE CANYON AREA, ONE PASSES AWAY:

Update: One of the patients, reported to be participating in a half marathon event taking place, was confirmed by family and responding medical personnel as having passed away.

Saturday morning around the 10:00am hour, May 10 of 2025, resources including the Ventura County Fire Department, AMR paramedics, and a copter from the Sheriff's Air Unit responded to multiple people suffering from heat related issues in the hiking area of Sycamore Canyon in Newbury Park.

Four patients were reported to be suffering from heat related illnesses. One had been rescued by the copter crew.

The patients were transported with multiple said to be in serious condition.

Saturday saw high temperatures in the 90's as compared to much cooler temps recently. Be prepared for these hot conditions if you are outside.

For many years, the Santa Monica Mountains sustained the #Chumash and #Tongva / #Gabrielino cultures.

Sycamore Canyon, which cuts through }#Rancho #Sierra #Vista/Satwiwa and #Point #Mugu State Park, was part of a Chumash trade route.

#Satwiwa, which means "the bluffs," was the name of a nearby Chumash village.

To reflect this heritage, Satwiwa Native American Indian #Culture #Center and #Natural #Area was established by the National Park Service in partnership with the Friends of Satwiwa.

A Native American guest host or a park ranger is on hand to answer questions from 9am to 4pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

Native American workshops, programs and art shows occur throughout the year.
