Bevor SARS-CoV-2 die Welt veränderte, gab es bereits ein erstes SARS-Coronavirus – und den Ausbruch 2002/2003, der knapp zur Pandemie wurde. Mit einer Sterblichkeitsrate von rund 10 % war SARS-CoV-1 deutlich tödlicher als sein Nachfolger, ließ sich aber stoppen – vor allem, weil Ansteckung erst nach dem Auftreten von Symptomen stattfand.
