Samurai Fiction slaps. Black & white visuals, bursts of color, jazz-rock soundtrack, and Hotei as the sword-stealing villain. Style for days, blood with bite, ninjas flipping like popcorn. It’s part homage, part parody, all cool.

Samurai Fiction

Samurai Fiction walks the tightrope of parody and homage.

VIKINGS vs SAMURAI
Samurai swords. Western guns. Prophecies and madness. Cloud of Sparrows is a bloody culture clash set in 19th-century Japan. Matsuoka swings big with flawed pacing but unforgettable characters and poetic violence. Stylish, wild, and weird in the best way.

Cloud of Sparrows: A Novel

After centuries of isolation, Japan opens to the West. Foreign ships threaten Edo, as American missionaries arrive, unaware of their predestined fate. With Lord Genji's prophecy, a remarkable adventure begins as a young nobleman meets a reformed gunslinger and a woman fleeing her own beauty.

VIKINGS vs SAMURAI
Guns, geishas, and samurai with second sight—Cloud of Sparrows ain’t playing. Matsuoka slams 19th-century Japan into the Wild West, prophecy into politics, and lets it all bleed. It’s chaotic, bold, and sharp where it counts.

I first heard Tomoyasu Hotei's Save Me at the end of #SamuraiFiction, a 1998-ish samurai movie. The moon slowly rising above the trees to the song is still my favourite version of it. SF has an amazing soundtrack by Hotei, who also appears in the movie.

This isn't the movie credits version, despite the moon. There's a slower build up to when the guitar (& the song) explodes, 2 minutes in here.

布袋寅泰 / HOTEI - 「SAVE ME」

YouTube

I once asked noted Japanese #Cthulhu mythos and #samuraifiction author, Ken Asamatsu, (over 120 books published) a couple of questions in the vein of "What would a samurai do in such or such a situation?" or "Was there any kind of ceremony or XYZ for such occasion?" And he replied, "I don't know. I just make it up. And you should, too."

I realized then that while research is important, there's no way to know all those impossible little things and obsessing over them will not forward the story.

Otoshiyori - Japanese Wiki Corpus

Otoshiyori was a female servant post (or also indicated the servant herself) in O-oku (the inner halls of Edo Castle where the wife of the Shogun and her servants resided) in the Edo period, and was often called Rojo as well.

"The RuiNin"
The ruined state of both his cybernetics and his life marked him as more than just "masterless" – he was ruiNin – an Augmented samurai wandering the wastelands, unable to end his existence lest the dead haunt him even in the afterlife.
