Love this new mural on the Fish Plaice just off Saltmarket in Glasgow, especially the tag line - it's very much in keeping with the Glaswegian sense of humour.

Simplified Scots Renaissance style tenements on Saltmarket in Glasgow. Designed by J.J. Burnet, it was built in 1899 for the Caledonain Railway Company, and the block includes a ventilation shaft for the railway tunnel which runs beneath it.

1880s tenement on Saltmarket in central Glasgow, designed to look like a 17th Century Scottish building.

Scottish 17th Century style tenements on the corner of Steel Street and Saltmarket. Despite their appearance, they weren't built until 1887. Designed by John Carrick, these were the first constructed by the City Improvement Trust. I just love the crow-stepped gables leading up to the chimneys.

Originally, this space as occupied by a road through to King Street, known as Millar's Place. Around 1890 (when the neghbouring tenements in the photo were built), the eastern section of it was covered over with a steel truss roof and became the Saltmarket Arcade, lined with small businesses (lower map), with the rest of the street being renamed Saltmarket Place.

The building in the middle of this photograph of Saltmarket in Glasgow at first glance looks very similar to the neighbouring late 19th Century tenements, but it's actually a relatively new one designed to blend in with its surroundings.

1880s tenement on Saltmarket in central Glasgow, designed to look like a 17th Century Scottish building. The pend in the middle of the ground floor leads through to the back court. Such areas behind blocks of tenements were common throughout Glasgow and while some just contained a communal wash house, outside toilet, and drying greens, others held workshops, small businesses, churches and even cinemas.

It's really quite a dramatic change, but shows that the City Improvement Trust seem to have selected a style for their new buildings that at least tried to tie in with the architecture it was replacing.

I was flicking through a copy of Bygone Glasgow, published in 1896, and came across this sketch of what is described a 'close in Saltmarket' from 1874 (on the left). This is very different from the current Saltmarket cityscape, which is dominated by Scottish 17th Century style tenements erected by the City Improvement Trust in the 1880s and 1890s (on the right).
