As a consortium partner of the Media Freedom Rapid Response (MFRR), Free Press Unlimited (FPU) contributes to monitoring and responding to press freedom violations across Europe. The latest annual Monitoring Report shows that journalists and media outlets faced sustained pressure throughout 2025, with 1,481 documented press freedom violations affecting 2,377 journalists and media-related entities in 36 European countries.

A guide to trauma-sensitive reporting for journalists in the MENA region
Journalists globally, especially in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), are not only reporting on trauma; many are living through it. From conflict and corruption to gender-based violence (GBV), exposure to distress is a daily reality. Yet mental health support in newsrooms remains rare, and the psychological toll is often treated as normal. The feeling of being unprotected is frequently dismissed as simply ‘part of the job,’ fueling a long-standing culture of silence. However, in December 2025, this silence was broken at the ARIJ 18th Annual Forum in Amman, Jordan.

Today, Free Press Unlimited welcomes government officials back to work in The Hague with billboards displaying killed Palestinian journalists, in an effort to add pressure on the Dutch government to take action against Israel’s war crimes. Israel has established a special military intelligence unit tasked with producing material to falsely portray journalists as Hamas operatives. This active smear campaign not only undermines the credibility of independent reporting from Gaza, but also lowers the threshold for violence against journalists by framing them as legitimate military targets. Free Press Unlimited calls on international media outlets to treat allegations towards journalists in Gaza with the utmost scrutiny.
