Talking about Critical Mass North: Spooky Edition!

On this weeks program Chris interviews Sally and Ruth from Streets Alive Darebin about Critical Mass North: Spooky Edition that calls upon Darebin Council and the Victorian Government to invest in safe separate bike lanes along High Street and re-instate the Streets for People investment program.

At the Council meeting Councilor Sarah Carter mentioned a few times that Summerhill Rd wasn't appropriate for protected bicycle lanes and that the Dutch wouldn't put a protected bicycle lane on a local street like this and would instead do traffic calming.

Traffic calming is an option for Summerhill Rd, but the only effective measure would be to prevent it from being a through road at all. To meet VicRoads recommendations for a non-separated bicycle street the throughput of Summerhill Rd would need to be reduced to less than 1000 cars per day and the speed limit again reduced to 30km/hr.

Achieving this large reduction in traffic on Summerhill Rd would clearly require dividing the road with filtered permeability(eg. Canning St/Lee St, Carlton), allowing bicycle through traffic but preventing car through traffic to and from HighPoint Shopping Centre.

This is an option that would maintain almost all parking.

It's extremely unlikely that the council would go for this option which is why no body has bothered proposing it.

The traffic calming the council is likely to go for will be inadequate. Speed humps or a 30km/hr limit will not sufficiently reduce traffic throughput for this road to meet recommendations to create a low stress cycling environment.

Anyone that thinks that Summerhill Rd isn't wide enough for a protected bike lane has dis-functional spacial reasoning.

It's at least 4 lanes wide the entire way. A two way protected bike path only needs one of those lanes.

They can take a parking lane or a traffic ane. Taking the traffic lane would be a great way to calm traffic on this residential St.

#safeonSummerhill This week kids and other Footscray riders won a 2 year bike lane trial on Summerhill Rd.

"As the culmination of BikeWest's #safeonSummerhill campaign, a Kidical Mass cycling event was held for local residents who want their children and loved ones to be safe while traveling through our suburbs. We rode from Summerhill Road to the Council meeting in Braybrook.
At the meeting 12 of us spoke & really enlightened Council what was at stake. My god, the presentations were incredible - so heartfelt, personal, vulnerable, genuine."
