On #ThisDayInHistory in 1927, #LeonTrotsky was formally expelled from the #CommunistParty. He had been a towering figure in the #RussianRevolution and early #USSR, and removing him cleared the way for #JosefStalin to consolidate power. Trotsky was assassinated in Mexico in 1940.
Gotta clean up all the old revolutionaries
On #ThisDayInHistory in 1919, timed to fit the second anniversary of the #RussianRevolution, the #PalmerRaids began in the US. #FBI and #police arrested over 6000 #anarchists & #socialists, deporting hundreds of them without #DueProcess. Such events are precedent for Trump's ICE.
On #ThisDayInHistory in 1917, the #OctoberRevolution broke out in #Russia against the Provisional Government. #Boksheviks were furious about WWI and radicalized by the suffering of the war. #Lenin led the #RussianRevolution through a brutal civil war and founded the #SovietUnion.
On #ThisDayInHistory in 1905, #TsarNicholasII issued the #OctoberManifesto, which served as the germ of the first Russian Constitution of the following year. It promised basic civil liberties and an elected legislature, in response to the first #RussianRevolution in Jan. of 1905.

I'm glad Mosfilm survived the fall of the USSR so we can get awesome films like this for free. Like Camus' "Just Assassins" it explores the personal and political contradictions of using political violence in the hope of achieving a less violent world.

"Explore the Makhnovshchina, a fascinating anarchist territory in southeast Ukraine from 1917-1921. 🚩 Led by Nestor Makhno, this movement was organized into autonomous, directly democratic communes. They first fought the Whites in the Russian Civil War, then allied with the Bolsheviks. The alliance eventually broke down, and the Bolsheviks destroyed the Makhnovshchina. It remains one of the few examples of a long-surviving anarchist society."
